The ferry office
Tickets, a bell, and a clock that runs four minutes fast on purpose.
The ferry office is the first interior in the book. Jonah wanted a room where everyone has a reason to stand still.
The clock is wrong so regulars can pretend they are on time. A newcomer who trusts the clock misses the boat. That is how the spare key changes hands in chapter two.
